Yellowstone National Park is a national park in the United States, mainly in Wyoming, but with small sections in the neighbouring states of Montana and Idaho. Yellowstone is the oldest national park in the world. There is a volcanic hotspot under the park. The super volcano under the park comes to an eruption every 600,000 years. In earlier major eruptions, ashes covered the entire mid-west of the United States with a layer of ash. A new eruption of such a magnitude would not only be catastrophic for the park, but could also produce a 'volcanic winter' that disrupts life for many years in the entire northern hemisphere. The last major eruption dates back more than 640,000 years ago.
